What does window 21 open, you think? A free pillow pattern and some stash ponderings.
Luminous Pillow Pattern
The pattern is once again provided for free by Art Gallery Fabrics with design by the prolific AGF Studio and I can’t begin to express how impressed I am with their generous publishing frequency of free resources.
As for the technique used, it’s simply marvellous. I’ve never tried it but have seen several stunning projects using this very method of starting with a hidden panel behind the front fabric and it intrigues me immensely. Why? Partly because you know the approximate finished look, but not to 100 %. Once you start cutting, patches may have shifted a bit or your cutting lines are slightly uneven, making it impossible to create two identical projects.
Another less obvious reason is the stuff you use in the back and its upcycling opportunity if you will. It’s not upcycling per se, but if there’s a slightly unloved fabric in your stash doing nothing but collecting dust, maybe you can breathe new life into it by using it in this type of background panel? It serves a purpose then and is crucial to the finish of the project, but you can’t see all its details due to the veil-resembling curtain of fabric in front.
Yesterday I announced a stash coaching giveaway (you can still enter until Wednesday!) and part of my reasons for such an endeavour is sustainability. We shouldn’t throw away precious resources, but do our best to reduce, reuse, recycle, upcycle and repurpose what no longer serves us in its original shape, size and look. And then I didn’t even mention forgetting all about what’s in the deepest parts of the piles, when they are in a state of complete disarray… 🙂
And if a fabric feels subjectively ugly, maybe this technique can make it unexpectedly cool? Who knows unless we try!? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic!
