8 Days of Christmas Mug Rugs from Finland: Day 5 with Teija

Welcome to Day 5 of our challenge “8 Days of Christmas Mug Rugs from Finland”! The maker of today’s beautiful mug rug in honour of winter nights is Teija.

 

The Mug Rug

Teija used a pattern of her own design, which she calls Silent Sky. This mug rug most certainly reminds me of a cold winter night when the clouds are absent, there’s bite on the cheeks and you lose yourself staring into the starry darkness. Stars have different colours and Teija’s interpretation hits that on the spot.

She’s featuring not only the red starry fabric (more below) but a turquoise (Peacock) and white (Unicorn) Sun Print 2020, and a black-on-white AGF Studio print from our shop purchased earlier this year. Thanks for this unexpected treat! There’s a lovely balance of all colours chosen.

When using stars for patterns it’s still very common not to mix different shape variants, but I really enjoy where Teija took this. In terms of technique it’s also a mix, as she told me the points of the big stars were made with Foundation Paper Piecing.

The rest of the patches are either humble squares or half-square triangles, which together become something stunning. There’s even more added interest in that the turquoise stars aren’t entirely identical. It’s impressive how much a small mug rug can invite you to look at one object from many angles. And then there were kitties on the back.

But we’re not quite done yet. Notice how Teija used echo quilting very cleverly to fill the empty spaces without doing much to them, yet they still became more stars?

The final size of the mug rug is 12.5″ x 9.5″.
