Welcome to Day 3 of our challenge ”8 Days of Christmas Mug Rugs from Finland”! The maker of today’s show-stopping mug rug(s!) is Auli.
The Mug Rug
Auli used a pattern called Peppermint Candy by Geta Grama of Geta’s Quilting Studio. She tells me she enjoys geometric and modern projects, which is why she picked this pattern for her part of the challenge.
It’s apparently based on a technique called reverse appliqué where you create the foundation of two mug rugs/quilt tops at the same time, using a craft knife to cut out the pieces needed from paper. Click through to the pattern details for hints how this fabulous project comes together.
Once the appliqué patches are ready, you can of course quilt them just as you like.
Here’s yet another example of how a limited range of fabric goes super long when combined with the right pattern. The power of ”basics” among print (patterned) fabrics is evident.
The final size of the quilt top is 14″ x 14″, but Auli decreased it to make a mug rug. Printing at 50% would give you a project around 7″ x 7″.
Who is Auli?
You can find Auli on Instagram at siipale_ where she posts about a variety of handicrafts. Recently she’s even tried the for us more exotic techniques glass blowing and basket weaving with impressive results. Be sure to follow her if you don’t already!
Thank you so much, Auli, for this contribution to our challenge!
The Fabric
Please find the fabric Star Bright in Dark Red by Andover Fabrics in our webshop!
It’s on sale this week because we’re moving later in November to a new location, so grab some for your own winter sewing if you like 🙂 It’s a limited-edition print by Andover and won’t come back.
